Depuis presque un siècle, la Palestine était tombée sous la domination de l’Empire romain, et la plupart des Juifs en étaient très mécontents. Les travaux forcés, les symboles idolâtres étalés dans « la terre sainte », la manière dont les opposants étaient torturés et mis à mort, la perte de liberté et de dignité – tout cela contribuait à la rancœur. Les impôts que les Romains imposaient au peuple juif étaient particulièrement détestés, un rappel continuel de l’humiliation nationale. Chacun devait verser à ce pouvoir étranger 10 % de sa production de céréales, 20 % des vins et des huiles, 1 % de tous ses revenus et un denier (l’équivalent du salaire d’une journée) par personne chaque année.
