L’année prochaine, tu seras dans l’impossibilité de poursuivre tes études puisque, faute d’élèves, il n’y aura pas de cours au Lycée de Tréviglio ; tandis qu’en entrant au Séminaire, tu pourras continuer tes études pour devenir prêtre. » Je répondis : « Oui, Maman. »

En ce temps-là, j’étais enchanté quand je pouvais servir la Messe ou aller avec certains prêtres visiter les malades, et, quand cela m’était possible, de participer à tous les services religieux. La prêtrise m’avait été présentée comme la suprême gloire que l’on puisse gagner sur cette terre.

Et ce fut ainsi que je revêtis la longue soutane noire qui distingue les prêtres des laïcs. […]
