L’idée d’écrire une brochure me vient à chaque fois que je rends visite à un malade. Souvent, face à la souffrance, je ne sais quoi dire. Comme les amis de Job qui sont restés toute une semaine sans pouvoir ouvrir la bouche, tellement la désolation était grande (Job 2.13).
La dernière fois, c’était face à notre voisin, professeur de son état, qui a eu un pied amputé (par la faute d’un infirmier négligent et incompétent). Pour le consoler avant de le quitter, un frère a cité Romains 8.28 qui dit : « Nous savons, du reste, que toutes choses concourent au bien de ceux qui aiment Dieu, de ceux qui sont appelés selon son dessein. » Certes, ce verset s’adresse d’abord au chrétien avant de pouvoir l’appliquer au non-chrétien. Et notre ami ne l’était pas encore. Seule sa femme est membre d’une dénomination. Je me suis demandé pendant longtemps si ce verset était approprié à ce moment précis, où la douleur et le deuil étaient encore vivaces et difficilement supportables. […]
