« Jésus priait un jour en un certain lieu. Lorsqu’il eut achevé, un de ses disciples lui dit : Seigneur, enseigne-nous à prier. » (Luc 11.1)

C’est cette question des disciples de Jésus qui nous vaut ce modèle de prière que l’on appelle par ses premiers mots : le Notre Père. « Voici comment vous devez prier », dit Jésus.

« Notre Père, qui es aux cieux ! Que ton nom soit sanctifié ; que ton règne vienne ; que ta volonté soit faite sur la terre comme au ciel. Donne-nous aujourd’hui notre pain quotidien ; pardonne-nous nos offenses, comme nous pardonnons aussi à ceux qui nous ont offensés ; ne nous induis pas en tentation, mais délivre-nous du malin. Car c’est à toi qu’appartiennent, dans tous les siècles, le règne, la puissance et la gloire. » (Matthieu 6.9-13)
